Garden City Golf Club, is a Private, 18 hole golf course located in Garden City, New York. The Club is also known as the "Garden City Men's Club" or simply the "Men's Club" to avoid confusion with the Garden City Country Club, and Cherry Valley Club, also located in Garden City, NY. It remains one of the few men-only golf clubs in the United States.
Garden City Golf Club first opened for play in 1899. The course was designed by Devereux Emmet. In 1906 and again in 1913, Walter Travis remodeled the course into what it is today, its strategies dictated by many deep pot bunkers. Travis installed them to promote "thinking golf," but one player soon dubbed Garden City the home of the "God-fearing approach shot." Tom Doak has renovated the course mindful of the historical layout and bunkering.
The course is minimalist in design.
Par for the course is 73. From the back tees, the course plays to 6,911 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 6,587 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 7, a par-5 that plays to 550 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 2, a par-3 that plays to 137 yards from the back tees.
Watch out for # 6, a 440 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 18, a 190 yard par-3.
